Grade 5 Showcases Ocean Expertise in Science Final Presentations

On Friday, June 6, Grade 5 students took center stage to present the culmination of their third-term science studies during a beloved tradition that celebrates their deep dive into oceanography.

Throughout the spring, students explored a variety of marine science topics, including the water cycle, ocean zones, ocean floor features, and marine food webs. Their studies culminated in an in-depth research project on a specific whale species. Through a series of guided mini-lessons and independent exploration, students became experts on their selected whales, learning about behavior, anatomy, historical whaling practices, modern threats, and ongoing conservation efforts. Just as important, they embraced their role as educators, sharing their knowledge with peers, faculty, and families.

Along the way, students developed essential academic skills: they answered questions using multiple resources, took notes focused on main ideas, organized their information into coherent sentences, and presented their findings using current technology.

A highlight of this year’s experience was a complementary STEAM challenge. After learning that plankton and krill—key parts of many whales' diets—float in the ocean’s "sunlight zone," students designed neutrally buoyant creatures using recycled materials. The hands-on activity sparked curiosity, problem-solving, and plenty of experimentation as students worked to prevent their creations from sinking.

“This project is such a powerful way to wrap up the year. It’s not just about learning facts—it’s about applying knowledge, thinking critically, and sharing that learning with confidence. I’m so proud of the growth our fifth graders have shown, both as scientists and as presenters.”
—Julie Blanco P’12, ’17, Science Department Manager/Upper School Science Teacher/Peregrine House Director

The presentations were a meaningful celebration of science, creativity, and student voice. We are so proud of our fifth-grade scientists and the confidence, curiosity, and communication they brought to their final project.
