Kindergarten Sets Sail with STEAM Boat Building
On Thursday, December 18, Far Hills Kindergarten students embarked on one of the most exciting and hands-on learning experiences of the year: their annual S.T.E.A.M. Boat Building activity. This much-loved tradition challenged students to design and construct a boat capable of safely carrying a gingerbread figure across water, blending creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration in a festive and meaningful way.
The experience was deeply rooted in cross-curricular learning, weaving together science, technology, engineering, art, math, language arts, and social studies. Before building began, students participated in thoughtful conversations, sharing ideas and making predictions about what materials, shapes, and structures might help their boats float and remain balanced.
Working collaboratively in small groups, Kindergarteners tested materials, explored buoyancy and balance, and learned firsthand how design choices affect outcomes. When challenges arose, students were encouraged to revise their plans, try new approaches, and persevere—developing problem-solving skills and resilience through hands-on experimentation. Teachers guided students to observe results, reflect on what worked (and what didn’t), and articulate their thinking, strengthening both scientific inquiry and communication skills.
The excitement reached its peak as each group proudly launched their boat, cheering as gingerbread passengers set sail. Whether successful on the first try or after a redesign, each launch was a celebration of effort, teamwork, and learning.
More than a seasonal activity, the STEAM Boat Building experience reflects Far Hills’ commitment to experiential learning. By encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and creativity, this tradition empowers young learners to think boldly, work together, and discover the joy of learning through exploration.
