Grade 1 Expo: Exploring the Wonders of Australia
On Thursday, June 5, the Grade 1 students of Far Hills wowed the school community with their knowledge, creativity, and confidence during the annual Grade 1 Expo. This year’s theme centered around a deep exploration of Australia—its wildlife, landmarks, traditions, and art.
Throughout the past several weeks, students became young researchers, authors, artists, and performers. Each student wrote and illustrated their own book about Australia, featuring a self-selected Australian animal. These books included fascinating facts, details about habitats and diets, and the students’ own reflections on what makes their animals unique.
The learning didn’t stop there. In science class, students built detailed models of famous Australian landmarks and sculpted their chosen animals, showcasing both scientific knowledge and artistic flair. In music class, they learned traditional Australian songs and dances, immersing themselves in the cultural rhythms and stories of the region.
In art class, the focus turned to traditional Aboriginal dot painting, an art form rich in meaning and history. Students created two powerful pieces:
-
A handprint dot painting symbolizes the connection between people, tradition, and land.
-
A painted boomerang, thoughtfully designed using authentic patterns and symbols. These boomerangs were not only beautifully decorated—they were also functional!
During the Expo, students proudly shared their books, sculptures, and landmark models with family, friends, and faculty. They confidently presented their animal research and brought the audience into the spirit of Australia by performing the songs and dances they had learned, inviting some brave audience members to join in the fun!
The event was a joyful celebration of inquiry, creativity, and growth. Congratulations to our Grade 1 students on an outstanding showcase of their learning. We can’t wait to see where your curiosity leads you next!
