Kindergarten Gingerbread Adventure

Far Hills Country Day School's Kindergarten students recently participated in an impressive cross-curricular Gingerbread adventure!  This adventure included explorations in language arts, math, social studies, art, science, engineering, and technology.

Language Arts
A classic fairy tale, The Gingerbread Man, laid the foundation for the unit along with more modern versions and iterations, including The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Astronaut, and The Gingerbread Cop.

Students summarized some of the variations in writing workshops and later they composed “stretchy” sentences to describe where a gingerbread character of their own making might live.

Social Studies
They compared and contrasted different elements of the stories using Double Bubble Thinking Maps to organize their observations. They observed the range of settings for the stories and how it impacted the characters and plot.

Using Brace Maps, students learned about “parts of a whole” by deconstructing a Gingerbread Man.

Fine Motor Dexterity and Art
Holiday bakers, decorators and crafters will appreciate the skill and patience exhibited by the Kindergarteners as they painstakingly decorated Gingerbread Houses fit for their Gingerbread characters. A crib for the baby, a rocket ship for the astronaut, a police car for the cop...and so much more.

The capstone activity for the Gingerbread Project was to design and build a boat to carry a gingerbread man safely across a body water. Kindergarteners were inspired by the Far Hills Grade 7 Boat Builders, one of the school’s signature projects. Far Hills boat builders are challenged to use creative thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, curiosity, tenacity, and resilience.

The Gingerbread Project not only captivated the Kindergarteners but our faculty and staff as well. To watch them light up as they made connections, made predictions, and drew conclusions was magical.

Well done Far Hills Kindergarteners!
