Grade 2 Celebrating Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah

Our Grade 2 students were treated to a special visit from Lindsay Mader P'28, '29, '31, '34, Katy Allen P'31, '34, and Ron Hamaoui P'29, '29, '31, '34 on Friday, October 11, 2024, who shared insights into the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. The parents engaged the students in thoughtful discussions, explaining the significance of each holiday and offering interactive activities to deepen their understanding.

The parents told a story to the students about these important holidays, and the class enjoyed honey and apples as they discussed the meaning behind the sweet tradition, which symbolizes hopes for a sweet and fruitful new year. Each student then wrote down their personal hopes on small paper apples, reflecting on what they aspire to accomplish in the coming year.

The group took a walk down to our school's pond, where the students took part in a meaningful Yom Kippur activity. They cast leaves into the pond to symbolically let go of things they wished they had done differently this past year, watching their thoughts drift away as part of a symbolic fresh start.

The walk to the pond, paired with these interactive activities, created a memorable learning experience that allowed students to connect with both holidays on a deeper level. Through this hands-on approach, our students gained not only an understanding of Jewish traditions but also valuable lessons on hope, self-reflection, and making positive changes in their lives. We are grateful to the parents for their time, thoughtfulness, and creativity in bringing these meaningful traditions to life for our Grade 2 class.
