Winston Valentine ’22 — A Journey of Curiosity and Passion

Far Hills was delighted to welcome back Winston Valentine ’22 on October 21. Now a senior at The Hill School and a published author, Winston returned to share how his years at Far Hills sparked the passions that continue to guide his academic and creative pursuits today. Looking ahead, he hopes to attend The University of the South in the fall.

A Time of Connection and Discovery

Winston fondly recalls his 7th-grade year (2020–2021) during the Cohort System—a time of challenge, but also one of extraordinary connection. “Even though it was a strange and difficult year,” he reflects, “being with the same group every day created a close and supportive community. Despite everything going on, that year was full of laughter, friendship, and some of the best memories I’ve made at Far Hills.”

He credits Mr. Kramer and Ms. Tuazon for their encouragement and lasting influence on his love of learning.

Igniting a Passion for History

Winston’s fascination with history began early, but his Far Hills experience transformed it into a true passion. “Mr. Kramer’s American History class brought the past to life better than any I’ve taken since,” he says. Projects on World War I and II inspired him to dive into research, especially military history—a field he continues to explore today through his writing.

A Scholar and Author

Winston’s recently completed book on Napoleon Bonaparte’s early life reflects years of study, discipline, and deep curiosity. He describes Napoleon as “a man navigating an explosive age of political, societal, and military upheaval—a figure whose early years shaped the course of modern history.”

For Winston, writing the book was both a test of endurance and a triumph of focus. “The hardest part was staying the course, but the greatness of this era kept me coming back.”

Guided by Support and Gratitude

When asked who has supported him most, Winston credits his mother: “My mom has been my greatest mentor and supporter.” He also expresses gratitude to his editor, Charles Wohlforth, for helping shape his manuscript into something “literarily impressive.”

As he looks ahead to his next project—a sweeping history of Europe from 1821 to 1914—Winston carries with him the same determination and love of learning that first took root at Far Hills.

“Work, effort, and passion will carry you as far as you’re willing to go,” Winston says—words that resonate deeply with all who remember their own beginnings at Far Hills.
