Generations Connect During Lower School Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Reading Weeks

From late February through early March, Far Hills Country Day School’s Preschool through Grade 2 classrooms were filled with the warm energy of grandparents and special friends as part of the beloved Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Reading Weeks tradition. This annual event brings generations together, creating memorable moments of connection, laughter, and shared stories that captivate our youngest learners.

Each classroom welcomed special guests who eagerly shared favorite children’s books, from timeless classics to modern tales of adventure and imagination. The excitement was palpable as stories came alive through animated voices, expressive gestures, and shared smiles—sparking a love of reading that extends beyond the classroom.

The timing of Reading Weeks made this celebration of books even more special. The tradition not only coincided with Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2, but also overlapped with our Scholastic Book Fair, creating an especially joyful stretch of time devoted to reading. From listening to stories in the classroom to discovering new titles at the Book Fair, students were surrounded by opportunities to explore the magic of books and the many ways stories inspire curiosity and imagination.

These visits were about more than the stories themselves—they were about strengthening the bonds between students and the special adults in their lives. Many grandparents and friends remarked on how meaningful it was to see children so engaged and inspired, while teachers observed the joy and curiosity these visits fostered. The presence of multiple generations served as a powerful reminder of the role storytelling plays in connecting people across ages.

As Reading Weeks came to a close, the school community celebrated not only the joy of books but also the treasured connections formed along the way. This tradition continues to exemplify Far Hills’ commitment to fostering curiosity, community, and a lifelong love of learning. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the grandparents, special friends, and parent volunteers who helped make these weeks so meaningful—your presence made a lasting impact on our students.
