Far Hills Students Support Homeless Solutions

Far Hills Students Support Homeless Solutions

At Far Hills Country Day School, learning extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community. On May 28, a group of students participated in a meaningful service initiative with Homeless Solutions, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals facing homelessness in Morris County.

Working alongside Chef Jenn, students prepared a homemade dinner for 65 guests living in one of Homeless Solutions’ transitional housing facilities. The menu—baked ziti, garlic bread, salad, and brownies—was thoughtfully planned in advance with student input and cooked from scratch in the Far Hills kitchen.

Later that day, on May 28, the students traveled to Homeless Solutions to personally serve the food they had prepared. Several parents were also present to support the effort, helping to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for the guests.

Now in its third year, the project has become a powerful tradition at Far Hills, giving students the opportunity to develop empathy, learn the value of service, and experience the direct impact of giving back. The experience provided students with a hands-on opportunity to engage in service learning and deepen their understanding of community connection and social responsibility. Their involvement extended beyond preparing a meal; it fostered a sense of purpose and demonstrated how even small actions can bring comfort, hope, and a sense of belonging to others.

Far Hills plans to continue its partnership with Homeless Solutions, with upcoming initiatives including a summer barbecue at a facility for widows and a birthday celebration at another location that houses families. Projects like this exemplify the school’s dedication to service learning, reinforcing the importance of compassion, community, and active citizenship in students’ everyday lives.
