Far Hills Students Spread Joy Through Service Learning Party Pack Initiative

On January 28, Far Hills students came together for a heartwarming Service Learning event: the creation of 72 birthday Party Packs for children in need. Thanks to the generosity of the Far Hills community during a recent dress-down day, the initiative raised approximately $1,100, which helped fund the project.

The Party Packs were filled with festive essentials, including cake mix, icing, plates and napkins, candles, balloons, streamers, and a tablecloth. These packs were donated to the Flemington Food Pantry, which supports families and children ages three to twelve, ensuring that every child can celebrate their birthday with joy.

A particularly special aspect of the project was the pairing of younger students with older “buddies” to help assemble the packs. This integrated collaboration provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect while making a tangible difference in their community.

“Service Learning fosters empathy, teamwork, and responsibility in our Far Hills students, showing them that even children can create meaningful change,” said Sue Miller, Grade 2 Teacher. “By engaging early, students build lifelong civic habits, strengthen school–community connections, and develop the confidence to contribute to a better world. This Party Pack project showed the children that a small act of kindness could really impact a child who might not otherwise get to have a birthday celebration, something that we get to have every year.”

Through initiatives like the Party Pack project, Far Hills students continue to learn that giving back is not just about the action itself—it’s about fostering compassion, building community, and creating lasting impact.
