Grade 6 English and Art Distance Learning Mashup

Far Hills Country Day School Grade 6 students recently read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. To help students develop and sharpen their critical thinking skills and expand their understanding of what they read, they had to make a caricature of one of the characters in the novel.

English teacher Ms. Young recruited the help of Far Hills Country Day School art teacher Ms. Panico. Since this lesson took place in the time of Distance Learning, Ms. Panico created an impressive video tutorial guide showing students how to make a caricature.

Students showed their extensive knowledge of the character’s physical and personality traits using details and examples as they created their caricatures. Below are three different caricatures of the main character, Cassie Logan.

All of the artists drew Cassie as a brave and confident character with her arms in a "superhero pose." Check out the other exaggerated characteristics to see what other traits were emphasized through art.

We applaud Ms. Young and Ms. Panico for finding a way to creatively partner during Distance Learning to make a memorable lesson plan.
