Sixth Grade Study of the Cardiovascular System
2/3/2010
Far Hills Country Day School is often characterized as a school with heart, but students took that descriptor to a whole new level these past few weeks as they learned about the cardiovascular system, presented projects offering an overview of the path of a red blood cell, and dissected a cow’s heart. FHCDS parent and cardiologist Dr. Edward Harback also visited the science class and, working with sixth grade volunteers, conducted a series of echocardiograms to further enhance our students’ understanding of the cardiovascular system.
As a culmination of this unit, our sixth grade scientists recently visited the Liberty Science Center to watch a cardiac bypass graft surgery taking place at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Students watched via a live feed; interacting with the surgical team during the procedure, asking questions, gathering knowledge, and gaining a clearer understanding of heart disease in the process. The cardiac classroom is offered as a joint venture between the cardiac surgery program at Morristown Memorial and the Liberty State Science Center.
